DESCRIPTION

Oxytetracycline is a broad spectrum antibiotic that at normal doses shows bacteriostatic activity against many Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, against spirochetes, rickketsia, mycoplasmas, chlamydia (Psittacose group) and some protozoa. Oxytetracycline is active against the following pathogenic microorganisms in poultry: Mycoplasma synoviae, M. Gallisepticum, M. Meleagridis, Hemophilus gallinarum, Pasteurella multocida. Of primary importance is plasmid mediated resistance. There is complete cross-resistance with other antibiotics of the tetracycline group.

Oxytetracycline is readily but incompletely absorbed after oral administration. In chickens, peak plasma concentrations after oral administration of 50 mg and 100 mg oxytetracycline per kg b.w. were 0.7 and 2mg/ml, respectively. Twenty four hours after administration, plasma concentrations were 0.1 and 0.4 mg/ml, respectively. The absorbed fraction of oxytetracycline is predominantly excreted in unchanged form by the kidneys and bile (enterohepatic circulation).

INDICATIONS

For the prevention and treatment of coliform septicaemia, omphalitis, synovitis, fowl cholera, pullet disease, C.R.D. and other diseases including bacterial infections following infectious bronchitis, Newcastle disease or Coccidiosis. Also useful following vaccination and at other times of stress.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

For oral administration.

Use 100 g OTC 20 per 150 litres drinking water.

Continue treatment for 5- 7 days.

UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS

Gastrointestinal disturbances may occur at recommended dosages with superinfections of yeasts and non-susceptible bacteria.

Allergic reactions in hypersensitised animals only seldom occur.

SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND WARNINGS

In farms where tetracycline antibiotics are regularly used, it is advised to control susceptibility of presumable pathogens by means of an antibiogram. Drinking water facilities (tanks, conduit pipes, nipples, etc.) should be cleaned properly after cessation of medication. Facilities completely separate from the normal drinking water provisions are advised.

Since tetracyclines have shown teratogenic potential in laboratory animals (may slow down bone growth of foeti and neonati and cause discolouration of bones and deciduous teeth) oxytetracyline should only be used in pregnant animals when it is therapeutically justified.
